David Vinckboons became known in Antwerp in the 1590s for his lively landscapes and fair scenes in the tradition of Peter Brueghel the Younger. In the week following the feast of Pentecost, children picked "Pinksterbloem", which could be translated as Pentecost flowers. They give them to a little girl, who then adorns herself with them, becoming the Whitsun bride. She is accompanied by bridesmaids and then goes from house to house, accompanied by children singing and playing music, to receive gifts.
