Lot no. 400
Attributed to François MAROT (Paris, 1666 - 1719)
Allegory of Geometry
Oil on canvas
(Enlarged by two side strips of 4 and 5 cm)
118.5 x 66.0 cm
Provenance: European private collection
Our allegory can be compared with an Allegory of Astronomy that went on public sale in 1995 (fig. 1; anonymous sale; London, Christie's, 7 July 1995, no. 343, as Entourage by Carlo Maratta). Our two canvases, of similar dimensions and with compositions that form a counterpart, were probably part of the same cycle of seven canvases illustrating the Liberal Arts.
