King David playing the harp
Oil and gold on oak panel, three boards
King David playing harp, oil and gold on oak panel, attr. to H. Francken
28.93 x 47.04 in.
73.5 x 119.5 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Brussels
This panel, which has come down to us in a marvellous state of preservation, seems to be attributable to the lesser-known son of Frans I Francken. The elder brother of Frans II and Ambrosius II, Hieronymus was particularly active in the Francken workshop run by Frans II. Few of his paintings are signed, as his activity was characterised more by the use of models invented by his younger brother or other painters before him.
This is the case with our composition, the authorship of which belongs to Joss van Winghe (1544 - 1603), as attested by the print engraved by Sadelaer at the end of the 16th century, which has been copied many times but of which no painted version seems to us to match the quality of our panel.
