These three still-visible towers are emblematic of the old port of La Rochelle. The Chaîne and Saint Nicolas towers form the majestic entrance to the old port. This painting can be compared with a pair of door tops by the van Blarenberghe brothers, signed and dated 1770, representing views of Lisbon and Warsaw (kept at the Bibliothèque municipale in Versailles).
