This relief, probably used for private devotion, is interesting and rare for its period, as the Virgin is holding the Child in her arms. In this depiction, the Child's body is turned towards the Virgin and his left leg crosses his right leg to extend to the Virgin's right elbow. Our relief can be compared to sculptors active in the first decades of the 15th century, such as Nanni di Bartolo (active between 1419 and 1451). The most rigorous comparisons can be made with certain Virgins with Child that can be linked, albeit uncertainly, to Nanni's early years: the marked turgidity of the flesh, the Virgin's large, strong hands and the soft texture of the locks of her wavy hair are characteristics of his early works that dialogue with Donatello's superb works on the subject, such as the group in the National Gallery in Washington. We can also compare our Madonna with examples in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin, the Staatliche Museum in Berlin and the Madonna in a private collection belonging to P. Corsini in New York.
