Our composition is known from other almost similar versions, notably the one that appeared in the Cologne sale, 15 November 2014 (Lempertz), lot 1031 (30 x 42 cm).
This painting, which probably belonged to a series depicting the seasons, was probably produced in the first decade of the seventeenth century, when Vrancx was closest to the art of Pieter Brueghel the Elder in both subject and style. He then painted mainly military battle scenes, using a more intense colour palette.
