ATTRIBUTED TO THOMIRE & COMPAGNIE An important mantel clock in brown patina bronze, gilt bronze and griotte red marble, representing Athena seated and leaning against her shield in which the movement is included. Gilt bronze dial with Roman numerals. Rectangular base decorated with applied gilt bronzes such as laurel wreaths around a thyrse and a frieze of palmettes, rectangular feet. Movement signed L. MOINET A PARIS. Attributed to Thomire & Compagnie. Restoration period, 19th century (With a key and a pendulum). Thomire & Compagnie was founded in 1819 by Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) and ceased trading in the early 1850s. Louis Moinet, born in Bourges in 1768, became secretary to A-L. Breguet, for whom he wrote a Traité d'Horlogerie. The Dictionnaire des horlogers français by Tardy (Paris, 1971) also mentions a Moinet Aîné in Paris, practising on rue de la Poterie between 1806 and 1820. A clock of an identical model was auctioned in London, with a dial signed Thomire & Cie and Moinet l'Ainé (Christie's, 9 December 2010, lot 316).
