Jean Bourdichon was a renowned French painter and illuminator, known as the creator of the illuminations in The Great Hours of Anne of Brittany, twice queen consort of France as well as being the titular duchess of Brittany, married to Charles VIII and then to Louis XII.
As noted in Les Enluminures du Louvre, Moyen Âge et Renaissance by Hofmann and Georgi:
Bourdichon was a 'painter and illuminator. He was born and died in Tours. A pupil of Jean Fouquet and perhaps heir to his workshop, he served as court painter to four kings: Louis XI, Charles VIII, Louis XII, and Francis I. He was identified as such as early as 1880 by André Steyert through the discovery of an archival document, a 1508 record related to his masterpiece, The Great Hours of Anne of Brittany (Paris, BnF, Lat. 9474). [...] From the mid-1470s, he worked with Jean Fouquet's principal collaborator, Boccaccio of Munich. Bourdichon succeeded Jean Fouquet as official court painter from 1481 onward.
He also produced ephemeral decorations and ornamentation, as well as designs for coins, precious metal work, and stained glass. As a painter, he was commissioned to produce numerous panel paintings and portraits of various members of the royal family, as well as paintings of Saint Francis of Paola after his death.
Today, Bourdichon is best known as an illuminator. However, the documentation of his work in this field remains relatively limited: only one manuscript with twelve 'histories' for Louis XI in 1480, four histories for Charlotte of Savoy in 1483, one miniature for Charles of Angoulême circa 1485, several scenes for Anne of Brittany in 1492, and finally his only firmly attested work, The Great Hours of Anne of Brittany.
His work can is kept at the Musée du Louvre and the Getty Museum, among other institutions.
