“Portrait of Don Narciso Vicente Fernández de Heredia y Navarra, Governor and Corregidor of Arequipa, Peru”
Oil on canvas
69,5 x 62 cm
As we read in the biography of the Spanish Royal Academy of History (RAH), Narciso Vicente Fernández de Heredia y Navarra "was chief magistrate of Salvatierra and Celaya in New Spain, as well as governor and corregidor of Arequipa in Peru". His wife, "Gerónima Spínola y Pilani, baroness of Spínola, born in Milan in 1723, was the daughter of Tomás Federico Spínola, to whom Francis III, Duke of Modena, granted the title of count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1766, for his outstanding services to the Royal Houses of Austria and Spain". He was the father of Narciso de Fernández de Heredia y Spínola, first Count of Heredia Spínola, and the grandfather of the famous Count of Ofalia.
Along the lower margin, in a handwritten inscription identifying the sitter, we read: "El S.t D."Narciso de Heredia y Navarra governador de Zelaya y Salvatierra en Nueva España, y de Arequipa en el Perù. Nacio en Alcira a 7 de Mayo de 1715. Murio en Arequipa a 12 de Agosto de 1779."
