His teachers were among others Isaac Israel und Willem Arnold Witsen. Very important for his life was the journey which brought him and his wife Maria Rueter in 1938 commissioned by the Dutch shipping company Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij to the Dutch East Indies (today's Indonesia) to capture the life in the Dutch colony. His oeuvre contains portraits, figure paintings and landscapes, a lot subjects are related to his journey and he created depictions of architecture and townscapes of Amsterdam.
