AUDIBERT DE RAMATUELLE (Joseph d'). Cours élémentaire de tactique navale. Paris, Baudouin, 1802. 2 parts in one volume in-4, basane racinée, smooth spine decorated, red edges Original edition of this important treatise on naval tactics dedicated to Bonaparte. The second part of the volume contains 68 folding plates, one of which is enhanced with watercolour. Audibert de Ramatuelle (1750-1840) served as a naval lieutenant during the American War of Independence. He began writing the work in 1789-1790 and modified it right up to the time of publication, no doubt noting the weakness of the French navy in the face of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. An elegant copy for Lord Exmouth, a naval officer in the Royal Navy, with bookplate. Edward Pellew (1757-1833), Viscount Exmouth, ended his career with the rank of admiral. He distinguished himself in battles against the French navy during the American War of Independence, then the wars of the Revolution and Empire, and in 1815 was given command of the Royal Navy fleet in the Mediterranean. Minor spotting and very discreet restorations to the spines and corners. Polak, n°7903.
