Lot no. 230
[Auguste de VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM]. Poster : Sale by authority of justice... 8 April 1886 1 page in-4 partly printed Seizure poster.
[The publication of the Contes cruels, despite their success, had hardly enriched Villiers. The creation of Le Nouveau Monde had ended in financial disaster. The writer, who since 1881 had been supported, along with his son Victor, by Marie Dantine and the young Albert Brégeras, Victor's half-brother, never escaped a situation of poverty that worsened even in his last years]. Witness the notice affixed to the door of his home (31 rue de Maubeuge), announcing the sale at the Hôtel des Commissaires-Priseurs, rue Rossini, of a very modest item of furniture, dated 8 April 1886: "Bureau, table, chairs, calorifère, etc."; the tears correspond to the six nails that fixed this notice. On the reverse, notification of the seizure to Mr Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, in the hand of the bailiff, Mr Gavard (on behalf of Crédit général des Flandres).
Provenance: former collections of P.-G. Castex and J.-M. Bellefroid, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam et son siècle (1991, no. 26).
