Auguste ZAMOYSKI (1893-1970)
"Black patina bronze after the 1923 model. Height: 29.5 cm, black patina proof, small bump and small scratches, signed "A. Zamoyski". Zamoyski", posthumous casting with founder's stamp "cire perdue C. Valsuani".
M. ZAGRODZKI Christophe Expert CVV message of 20 December 2024. "This is one of the most synthetic portraits of Zamoyski, who while pushing to the extreme the stylisation of his effigies, knows how to keep the characteristic features of his models. The sculpture on display is a posthumous cast, as we know of no bronze versions from the period of Formism. We know that the original version was made by Zamoyski in black patinated plaster in 1923, with another portrait carved in stone the following year. The late editions, mainly produced by renowned foundrymen, fill this gap in the artist's heritage, especially given that he destroyed many of the works from this important period in his career".
Auguste Zamoyski, born on 28 June 1893 in Jabłoń, Poland, and died on 19 May 1970 in Saint-Clar-de-Rivière, was a Polish sculptor who participated in the Formist movement. Born into a large family of Polish nobility. His interest in aesthetic theory never waned. He took part in the creation of an expressionist artistic movement which, in 1919, took the name of Formism, "the most important aesthetic movement in independent Poland". The essential characteristic of the movement, according to Léon Chwistek, often considered, alongside Witkiewicz, as the main theoretician of Formism, was "the attempt to create a new style, based on the concepts of realism and beauty, which were developing from the experience of the cubists, futurists and expressionists". Three periods are generally distinguished in the development of Zamoyski's work: - The Formist period (1917 - 1925), in Zakopane (Poland) - A Realist period (1925 - 1950) (France, Brazil) - A period of spiritual expressionism (from 1950); last years in Brazil, France, Poland In 2002, Hélène Zamoyska donated a large part of Auguste Zamoyski's work to the Abbey of Sylvanès, and the Musée Zamoyski opened its doors in 2009. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the sculptor's death (2020), an exhibition entitled Auguste Zamoyski. Thinking in Stone, as well as an edition of the sculptor's archives are being organised in Poland (2017 - 2020) by the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw in collaboration with the Auguste Zamoyski Museum in Sylvanès. On 15 January 2019, the collection of Zamoyski's works held in Sylvanes since 2009 was acquired by the National Museum in Warsaw. It comprises ninety-three pieces that have been on display in this museum since 17 May 2019.
