Augustin Jean Moreau-Vauthier (1831 Paris - 1893 ibid.) attr; Hermes Bronze, dark patina. Varied grey marble, dark, white and red flecked. Fully sculpted depiction of Mercury as a youth, balancing on a small sphere with stars and zodiac signs in relief, tying his right winged sandal and holding a staff in his raised left hand. Moreau-Vauthier entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1850 and studied under Armand Toussaint, making his debut at the Salon in 1857. He specialised in allegorical and mythological figures and also exhibited at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. In 1878, the sculptor created his stylistically comparable Fortuna figure. Height 32.2 cm Attributed to Augustin Jean Moreau-Vauthier (1831 - 1893). Dark patinated bronze figure on a marble base.
