Lot no. 40
AULDJO (John) (attributed to). Six drawings relating the ascent of Mont Blanc: Scaling a wall of ice, Passage of a block of ice in a crevice, A dangerous part of the glacier, Bridge of snow where the party Breakfasted, Passing a cliff, Sliding down a snow hill. [London], [1827]. On bristol board, matted, 12 x 16 cm. These original drawings are executed in wash, Indian ink, brush and pencil. They are located in pencil (in the same way as the captions to the lithographs in Auldjo's work published in 1827). Although slightly different in style, they correspond to 6 of the 8 lithographs engraved from the author's drawings by Hullmandel. It is likely that these are the original drawings by the author who, in the preface to his book, declares himself to be an amateur artist and says that he called on an experienced artist for the lithographs.
