Lot no. 140
AULU-GELLE. Noctes atticæ. Amsterdam, Louis Elzevier, 1651. In-12, red morocco, gilt iron with the Golden Fleece at the corners and in the centre, spine decorated with the same repeated iron, interior lace, gilt edges (period binding). First edition by Elzevirian, "very attractive and considered to be very correct", writes Willems, and of which fine copies are rare and sought-after. It is attributable to the German scholar Johann Friedrich Gronow, known as Gronovius (1611-1671).
The intaglio engraved title-frontispiece, depicting a philosopher seated at his work table, appears to have been inspired by a composition by Rembrandt.
A precious copy bound for the Baron de Longepierre, with the insignia of the Golden Fleece that he had adopted as a mark of belonging embossed fifteen times on the boards and spine of the volume.
From the libraries of the Earl of Brownlow, with bookplate at the manor of Belton, Lincolnshire; and Lucius Wilmerding, with bookplate.
Hinges and corners restored (upper hinge fragile), sections G and H inverted.
Willems, n°1127.
