Exceptional Meissen tabatiere. with princely portrait of the Saxon electoral princess Maria Antonia
Porcelain. Oval, straight body with slightly domed hinged lid. The wall, lid and underside decorated with a pastel-coloured cartouche of rocailles and ribbons with gallant, scenic depictions of children disguised as adults. Inner wall and base with colourful floral decoration. The inner lid bears a half-length portrait of a princely lady, Maria Antonia Elector Princess of Saxony (1724 - 1780), daughter of the Bavarian Elector Charles Albert of the House of Wittelsbach (later Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire as Charles VII) and wife of Frederick Christian, Elector Prince of Saxony. Extremely fine polychrome painting in the stippled manner. Floral ornamented, gilt silver mount. H. 5.6 cm. 8 cm x 6 cm.
