Extremely fine Viennese enamelled ship in the shape of a single-masted sailing ship on wheels, so-called Nef. Silver, gilt and partly enamelled. Curved ship-shaped body with detailed mast, sails, rigging and canopy-like superstructure. Several armed figures depicted on the foredeck and aft deck as well as in the mast basket. The hull, canopy, pennant and sails decorated with finely painted, polychrome enamelled scenes from mythology. Railing open-worked in rocaille. Marked, hallmark, master K. u. k. Court purveyor Ludwig Politzer (active since ca. 1876). Weight approx. 515 g. H. 18.5 cm. 22.5 cm x 6.5 cm. Ludwig Politzer was one of the most important silversmiths and jewellers of the second half of the 19th century in Vienna. He specialised in the production of enamelled objets d'art, silver work and nefs based on Renaissance models. His works of art were shown at the international exhibitions in Paris in 1878 and 1900. A very fine and decorative Austrian gilt silver mounted enamel nef by Ludwig Politzer (active since around 1876). Assay and master's mark. Austria. Vienna. Circa 1880.
