South Australia was officially created as a British colony on 28 December 1836 (a date known and commemorated as Proclamation Day). It became a self-governing colony in 1856 with the ratification of a new constitution by the British Parliament, with a secret ballot and a two-chamber Parliament. In 1857, it had a population of 109,917. The city of Adelaide owes its name to the Queen Consort, wife of King William IV. It was founded in 1836 to accommodate free Britons. In 1851, the discovery of gold triggered a gold rush and around 8,000 men left Adelaide in the hope of making their fortune. They returned with gold nuggets that helped to alleviate the economic crisis. An assay office was set up in 1852 to manufacture ingots and then decided to mint them in response to the need to convert the nuggets without royal approval. A local engraver, Joshua Payne, used local tools to produce the country's first legal tender gold coins for the Government Assay Office in Adelaide. Coins of 10 shillings, 1 pound and 5 pounds were planned. Only the one-pound coin was minted and put into circulation. On our extremely rare test, as on the 1 pound coin, weight and title are indicated. For the 5 pound coin, the weight is 1 ounce, 8 pennyweight and 4 grains (44.102 g), and the title is 22 carats. Following this manufacturing attempt, a branch of the Royal Mint was established in Sydney and began producing gold sovereigns. In 1921, the Melbourne Mint minted 7 examples of the 5 pound coin, based on the Joshua Payne design of 1852. Another example is known to be in the Victoria Museum in Melbourne, and is extremely rare and of great interest. AUSTRALIA Victoria (1837-1901).
