"My dear Master, (...) by the effect that draws the body after the soul, the voice and the accent were undoubtedly in rhythm with the pace of this borrowed thought (...) I am very much at ease, I who am so scrupulous and worried about the rest of my life, when it comes to you, having never let anything spill over onto others but my admiration for you which, thank God, is not about to dry up. So I was a little humiliated to see that my 'latest creations', as you call them, were taken in a very uncreative sense, and that you spoke to me with the kind of contemptuous graciousness that a Fuster can inspire. No, I will send you my latest creation, a very sad piece of news, which, alas! and fortunately, is also an imitation of you."
Proust, who denies having made fun of Montesquiou during a dinner at Daudet's, reaffirms his admiration for him. He also mentions the publisher Charles Fuster and announces his last short story (which will be the last published during his lifetime), "La Mort de Baldassare Silvande".
Robert de Montesquiou and Marcel Proust enjoyed a long and tumultuous friendship: the 252 letters that Marcel Proust had written to him between 1893 and 1921 were bought at auction (1923-1924) by the author's brother, Robert Proust, and put together to form the first volume of Marcel Proust's Correspondance générale (Plon). This collection was subsequently reintroduced to the market in 1954.
