Lot no. 270
Author: Erasmus of Rotterdam (Desiderius Erasmus, original title in Latin Moiae Encomium or Stultiae Laus) Printed in Basel 1761 'at the expense of savageness'. The book is in 1/8 Folio with hard cover and leather spine with gold lettering, in good condition has a few small damp stains, has a beautiful copper engraving on the frontispiece and under the title on the first page a letterpress mark. This edition is in French with an Italian translation on the front (translation by Nicolas Gueudeville). It is a satirical work, originally published in 1511, criticising the society and political power of the time, through the personification of Madness (Moria) who delivers a eulogy of herself. Curious and significant is the indication of the edition "at the expense of savageness", which provides an accentuation to the satirical aspect of the work. The edition presents the text in French against the Italian translation. At the end of the preface by the translator, Nicolas Gueudeville, there is a simple but delightful closing of the text. Book in excellent condition, complete.
