Author: Pietro Paolo Floriani da Macerata Printed in Venetia 1654 for Francesco Baba dedicated to the Most Serene Highness of Giovan Federico Duke of Bransuich, Luneburg & c. Folio volume, stiff cardboard cover with binding reinforcements and with indication of the author written in pencil. Finely copper-engraved frontispiece containing the title of the work surmounted by a complex heraldic coat of arms divided into heraldic symbols, above the shield are several crests. On the fifth page, after the dedication, the author's portrait is engraved. Beautiful capilettera and headpieces. The volume is completed by a beautiful set of engravings and illustrations of defensive plans, architecture and tools and ways of building them. The cut of the volume has slight staining. Good condition, only a few small woodworm holes in the first two unprinted pages. Floriani served Philip III in Madrid before entering the service of Archduke Leopold, for whom he worked on many fortifications, including that of Brisach and Vienna. He later worked for the Barberini family in Rome and Ferrara. The book deals with defences and the ways of building them, including machines.
