THE TRIAL OF MARSHAL NEY [NEY (Michel). - Set of 2 letters. - Decazes (Élie). Autograph letter signed as Minister of the General Police, addressed to General Louis-Sébastien Grundler. S.l., [shortly before 28 September 1815]. "Call M. Legros c[ommissai]re de police à Lille; il a vu le m[aréch]al dans cette d[erniè]re ville pendant[an]t l'interrègne et lui a entendu dire qu'il avoit jouer le roi sans jambes, qu'il noit avait poursuivi Bonap[arte] mais qu'il l'avait suivi...". (1/2 p. in-4). After Marshal Ney's arrest in August 1815, interrogations were carried out by Élie Decazes, then Prefect of Police for Paris, and General Grundler, rapporteur for the Council of War. The latter would intervene as such in the Marshal's trial in November 1815. Attached is a copper-engraved trial of Marshal Ney. - Soult (Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu). Letter signed to Gabriel de Chénier. Château de Soult-Berg [department of Tarn], 29 April 1849. "I only received a few days ago the beautiful eulogy that you made of Marshal Moncey, Duke of Conegliano, and that the Academy of Besançon crowned in 1847. I have read the magnificent phases of this life full of honour and I congratulate you most sincerely on having written them. Above all, I warmly applauded the noble resistance made by my worthy friend not to chair the commission of the Council of War which was to judge the evil Ney, Duke of Elchingen, preferring to be sent into exile, even to be locked up in a fortress, rather than have to blame himself for the death sentence passed on one of his unfortunate comrades. I would also like to thank you for reproducing in this eulogy the few words I spoke at the time when the honourable remains of Marshal Moncey were laid to rest in the vault of the Invalides? (one p. 1/2 in-8). The lawyer Gabriel de Chénier (1800-1880) was, among other things, head of the military justice office at the Ministry of War.
