AVENTURES DU GOUROU PARAMARTA, a funny Indian tale translated by Abbé Dubois. Paris, A. Barraud, 1877. In-8, jansenist red morocco, interior lace, gilt edges on witnesses, edged slipcase (Durvand). A fine edition of this tale taken from the Pañchatantra, an ancient Indian collection of fables traditionally attributed to a Kashmiri Brahmin named Vichnu-Sarma.
This edition reproduces the first French translation, given by Abbé Dubois in 1826, with a preface by Francisque Sarcey. It is illustrated with 8 out-of-text etchings and 140 vignettes in the text by Bernay and Cattelain.
One of 2 first copies on first choice vellum (n°2).
A superb and extremely rare copy printed on vellum.
Orange spotting on the first and last pages, some traces of dampness not serious.
