Lot no. 8
AYMES (J.). La Gastronomie provençale, ou Catalogue raisonné des denrées de Provence (...), dedicated to the three Provençal brothers... Paris, à l'entrepôt, 1828. In-12, half morocco fawn basane, decorated smooth spine, black title page, illustrated cover in colour, untrimmed (Modern binding). Unique and extremely rare edition of this little book which is not described by any bibliographer consulted. It contains three folding plates coloured at the time. The first shows an olive harvest and an oil mill; the second clay jars; the third the author's property. The text is of great interest, providing first-hand information on Aix oil, orange blossom water, Roi René wines from the Cuque hillside (this was one of the first wines whose bottles were labelled), tuna, sole fillets, red mullet, sardines, anchovies from Fréjus and Catalonia, olives stuffed with tuna and truffles, and so on. Unlike the Morcrette copy (2023, no. 138), the cover is in white paper (not blue), and the back cover gives the title in English.
