Cold decoration on boards and spine, gilt title on first board and spine, spotted edges (minor defects). First French edition, illustrated with 2 colour maps (one folding), 4 plans, 2 folding panoramas (one large one in colour) and 16 hors-texte engravings (the road map of Switzerland is missing, it is attached as a photocopy). Light angular spotting pp. 240-300. Very rare edition of this guide to Switzerland, probably the most used by tourists in the second half of the 19th century. Karl Baedeker (1801 - 1859) was a German bookseller and publisher specialising in travel guides. Having published his guides in pocket format and in three languages (German, French and English), his guides became widely known throughout the world.
