BAGIRMI, south-east of Lake Chad. Carved and engraved wood, dark patina. Rare old equestrian figure of a rider on a stylised horse. The rider is a hieratic figure, with square shoulders in line, short arms at right angles, and an almost spherical head with a face separated by a prominent nose. Height: 36 cm. Minor chips.
