BAHINEMO, Hunstein Mountains, Papua New Guinea. Hardwood, natural pigments. An abstract sculpture depicting a "Garra" crocheted mask with a rhythmic superimposition of two concave planes extending into a hook at the ends. In the centre is a stylised face whose tubular eyes reinforce its power of expression. Garra masks are identified as bush spirits. During initiation rites, the male dancers carry the garra in their hands. Height: 78.5 cm. Width: 23.5 cm. Provenance: Collection of the painter Alain Plouvier, Paris and Chédigny (37).
