BAILLON, Jean-Baptiste (Paris) CIRCA 1750-1770 Louis XV period flat pocket watch in 18K enamelled pink gold. Case: reverse adorned with a poylchrome decoration painted on enamel depicting Cupid holding his bow in a landscape, surrounded by small green enamelled leaves. Dial: white enamel (intact), painted Roman and Arabic numerals, winding aperture, chased metal bezel signed Jn, Bt Baillon. Movement: mechanical, key winding, two-hammer striking mechanism, pendant striking mechanism, signed. Dial and movement signed. Numbered 4244. Diameter: 48 mm. Gross weight: 100.27 g. An illustrious watchmaker of his time, Jean-Baptiste Baillon (1727-1772) was appointed Watchmaker to Queen Maris Leczinska in 1751. He was located on the Place Dauphine in Paris, under the sign "La Belle Image", and left a large number of highly refined timepieces, some of which are kept in numerous museums (Louvre Museum, Versailles, Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Metropolitan Museum in New York, etc.).
