Lot no. 201
BAKER Josephine (1906-1975). L. A. S., Paris, Sunday 8 June [1947], to General de Gaulle; 2 pages oblong in-8 on the letterhead of the Claridge Hotel. She is about to fly to South America, in great shape, her health having returned. "I don't need to tell you that I'll go for my great Charles". She warned the General of "the efforts being made at the moment by the American Government to free Marshal Pétain. Don't you think it would be a masterstroke to free him yourself, because your action would break down all the barriers between the French that stand in your way? At the same time, the Americans will not be able to exploit later the success of what they are doing for Pétain"... And she signed her name: "your faithful and dirty Gaullist soldier Josephine Baker".
