Lot no. 261
BALINGHEM (Antoine de). Apresdinees et propos de table contre l'excez au boire, et au manger, pour vivre longuement, sainement, et sainctement, dialogisez entre un prince et sept savants personnages. Saint-Omer, Charles Boscart, 1624. In-12, red half-chagrin, spine decorated with gilt fillets, spotted edges (19th century binding). Second edition, partly original, of these facetious dialogues on drunkenness and gluttony.
Written by the Jesuit father Antoine de Balinghem (1571-1630), a native of Saint-Omer who taught philosophy in Douai before becoming a priest in Lille, this pleasant collection was first published in Lille in 1615. The text contains a wealth of anecdotes and interesting information about Flemish customs in the early 17th century.
This edition is enlarged with many new chapters and articles, and is followed by a series of propositions by Carême, in which he attempts to explain that sensual pleasures transform man into a beast, damage his health, sadden his soul and lead him to damnation.
Corners rubbed, inside slightly foxed, small scattered dampstains, inscription crossed out on title, small angular lack on f. ã3, ink stain pp. 16-17.
