Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764-1846) was a landscape engraver; during his first trip to Italy in 1786, he discovered a passion for architecture, which he studied at the Royal Academy of Architecture. He was professor of architecture at the École polytechnique in 1796, then at the École des beaux-arts in 1818, architect of the Panthéon and of prisons: we owe him in particular the Palais de Justice in Lyon in 1842 and the Saint-Joseph prison in the same city (1836). It was his son, Victor Baltard (1805-1874), who designed the famous halles (covered market) in Paris. Perret, 0246- Meckly 012 - Regards sur les Alpes 36-B
