BALZAC (Honoré de). Scènes de la vie privée. Paris, Mame & Delaunay, 1832. 4 volumes in-8, blond glazed calf, quintuple gilt fillet and cold roulettes, spine decorated with gilt and cold motifs, interior lace, marbled edges (Period binding). Second edition, partly original. The first two volumes reproduce the original 1830 edition, in two volumes, while the last two volumes are in the original edition. Mention of Second Edition on the four titles. A very fine copy in attractive contemporary bindings, attributed to Bauzonnet in the Robert Hoe catalogue. It is enriched by an autograph letter from Balzac to the bookseller Charles-François Frémau from Reims, signed HdB and dated Paris 26 March 1828 (1/2 p. in-8 on 2 ff. on the letterhead of the Imprimerie H. de Balzac, rue des Marais-Saint-Germain, sealed, folded and addressed on the verso to Monsieur Fremeau [sic] at the Grand hôtel des Domaines): "My dear Monsieur Fremeau, you promised to come on Monday morning and you forgot me. Please come very early tomorrow morning, Thursday, or tell me what time I can see you at home. The matter we have to discuss is extremely important to me and is of the utmost importance to you...". As a printer, Balzac was paid for an edition of La Fontaine in debts owed by three booksellers, including Frémau, who turned out to be bankrupt. Balzac, wishing to settle the matter amicably, ended up being paid in books from his own collection.
