Posthumous edition of this collection of essays published and prefaced by Claude Girard, friend and correspondent of Guez de Balzac, secretary to the Duc d'Épernon who became Archdeacon of Angoulême. The work, dedicated to the Marquis de Montausier, opens with an engraved title page depicting the author in conversation with his friends in a grand classical setting with a French garden in the background. Beautiful Elzévirienne edition in Trautz-Bauzonnet binding. ☞ The volume comes from the library of Robert Hoe, with his bookplate. - A copy of this title dated 1659 appears in his catalogue (Part I, 1911, No. 177), advertised in Trautz-Bauzonnet red morocco. - PHP stamp. 📖 Willems, 1297.
