Lot no. 84
BAOULE, Ivory Coast.
Wood inlaid with a dark brown patina.
This representation of a "blolo bla" wife from the afterlife stands out for the refinement of its modelling, the delicacy of its features and the demanding classicism of its forms. The figure is standing on a pedestal, her legs slightly bowed and her hands delicately placed on either side of the umbilicus in a gesture that evokes welcome and respect. Note the raised scarification marks, the small breasts, the thin, elongated face and the finely incised hairstyle.
According to Mr Dermigny's certificate, this statue was brought back in the early years of the 20th century.
