Barbara Rosina de Gasc (1713 Berlin - 1783 Dresden)
Rococo portrait of a "Miss von Tschirschky and Bögendorff"
Self-confident, with an alert gaze, sparkling eyes and a smile on her well-formed face, the young, aristocratic, elegant lady looks gracefully and almost en face at the viewer with her head slightly tilted. The painter shows her great beauty, which also lies in her aesthetic, slender figure, with the long neck accentuated by a flirtatious lace ruff. In this highly suggestive hip portrait, the artist achieves a masterly bravura in the rendering of the fabric, convincingly depicting both the shimmering white silk and the delicate lace and sparkling stones of her jewellery. The dress is enlivened by bright coral red bows, the colour of which is repeated in the flowers of her discreet hair ornaments. The figure is skilfully shifted slightly off the central axis, lending the portrait a subtle liveliness. The sitter's fashion and hairstyle are based on French rococo models, which suggests a date of around 1760-1770. At the same time, Barbarina Rosina de Gasc portrayed the same lady a second time in a pink and turquoise dress (auctioned at Neumeister, Munich, 05.12.2018, lot 324). This makes it possible to identify her, as this portrait is labelled "Fräulein von Tchischki-Bögendorff" on the reverse. She is therefore a lady from the noble family Tschirschky-Bögendorff, which had branches in Saxony, Silesia and Bohemia. She could be a daughter of Hermann Ludwig Eugen von Tschirschky-Bögendorff, who served as chamberlain at the Saxon court, and perhaps she herself was a lady-in-waiting there. The painting was created by Barbara Rosina de Gasc, who, like her sister Anna Dorothea Therbusch, came from the important Lisiewski family of painters. Both were taught by their father, the Polish portraitist Georg Lisiewski, who had settled in Berlin as a court painter. Barbara Rosina Lisiewska's first marriage was to the Prussian court painter David Matthieu (1697 - 1756) in 1741. After Matthieu's death, Barbara Rosina was appointed court painter to Zerbst in 1757 before marrying Professor Ludwig de Gasc, a friend of Lessing, in 1760 and following him to Brunswick in 1764. At the Brunswick court, she found a generous patron in Duchess Philippine Charlotte. Another highlight of her career was her appointment as court painter in Dresden, where she was also made an honorary member of the academy in 1769. Oil on canvas; 80 cm x 59.5 cm. Frame.
