View of a river flanked by large, tree-covered rocks. Impressive, finely painted, romantic landscape from Koekkoek's mature oeuvre with accentuated lighting and atmospheric depiction of the sky. The painter initially learnt from his father Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and later studied at the Academy in Amsterdam. The artist, who received many awards from 1829 onwards, is considered one of the most important Dutch landscape painters of the 19th century; Koekkoek travelled to the Harz Mountains, Luxembourg and Italy, among other places. In 1834 he settled in Kleve on the Lower Rhine, where he founded his own academy for landscape painting in 1841.
