Verso auf der Tafel eigenhändiger Klebezettel von B. C. Koekkoek mit Unterschrift und Siegel des Künstlers in rotem Lack. Ferner Klebeetikett der Firma „Fs. Smaelen“ in Brüssel, von der Koekkoek seine Holztafeln bezog, sowie Ausschnitt wohl eines Auktions- oder Bestandskatalogs in französischer Sprache; darauf Siegel in rotem Lack mit Inschrift „Jules de Brauwere / Expert / Bruxelles“. Der in Holland geborene, seit 1834 jedoch im niederrheinischen Kleve ansässige B. C. Koekkoek erwarb sich bereits im 19. Jahrhundert den Beinamen „Prinz der Landschaftsmalerei“. Der enorme Erfolg und Einfluss seiner romantischen Landschaften drückt sich nicht zuletzt in der illustren Schar seiner Auftraggeber aus, zu denen u. a. Zar Alexander II. von Russland, König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. von Preußen und natürlich der holländische König Willem II. gehörten. Aus der unberührten, leicht hügeligen Natur des Niederrheins bezog Koekkoek zeitlebens das Motivrepertoire seiner Werke. Während er sich bei einigen Gemälden recht genau an den topographischen Gegebenheiten orientierte, zeigen die meisten seiner Arbeiten die Tendenz zur Idealisierung anhand eines kunstvollen Bildaufbaus. Von entscheidender Bedeutung für seine meist in hellerem Kolorit ausgeführten Gemälde ist die perfekte Lichtführung. So besticht unser harmonisch komponiertes Gemälde u. a. durch das überzeugende Licht-Schattenspiel auf der Wiese mit den grasenden Kühen. Dem mächtigen Baum in der linken Bildhälfte kontrastiert auf der Gegenseite ein bereits mit braunem Blattschlag besetzter dünnerer Baum, hinter dem ein Haus erkennbar wird. Davor führt ein kleiner Wasserfall zu einem Bach, an dem zwei Männer beim Fischfang zu sehen sind. Wir danken Dr. Guido de Werd für die Bestätigung der Eigenhändigkeit von Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. Smaelen” of Brussels, Koekkoek's panel supplier, and with a glued on cutting from an auction or inventory catalogue in French bearing a red varnish seal that reads “Jules de Brauwere / Expert / Bruxelles”. B. C. Koekkoek was born in Holland but resided in Cleves on the Lower Rhine Region as of 1834. He was already awarded the epithet “Prince of Landscape Painters” during the 19th century, and his incredible success and influence were expressed in the number of his illustrious patrons, which included Tsar Alexander II of Russia, King Frederick William IV of Prussia and the Dutch King Willem II. Throughout his life, Koekkoek derived the motifs for his works from the untouched, rolling hills of the Lower Rhine Region. Although many of his works depicted a realistic topography, many tend towards idealisation and elaborate composition. His works generally utilise a light colour palette, and live from Koekkoek's perfect use of light. For example in the present, harmonically composed piece where convincing chiaroscuro effects play across the meadow with its grazing cows. The tall tree on the left sets a strong contrast to the brown foliage of the smaller tree behind the house on the right. Before the house we see a small waterfall opening into a stream where two men are shown fishing. We would like to thank Dr. Guido de Werd for confirming the authenticity of this work.
