Lot no. 23
BARETTI (Martin). Geological overview of the Mont Blanc range in relation to the probable route of a tunnel for a new railway line. Turin, J. Candeletti, 1881. In-8, half-maroquin binding with corners, covers preserved (Modern binding). First edition, illustrated with three colour lithographed fold-out maps and sections in fine.
An interesting geological study by a scholar as serious as he was visionary. The "grand tunnel" between Taconnaz and Entrèves is 13.1 km long and roughly follows the current route. A fine copy.
Martin Baretti (Turin 1841 - Canavese 1905) was an Italian mountaineer and geologist. He was the author of numerous studies on the geology of Piedmont and the Alps. On 20 July 1880, he made the first ascent of the peak that bears his name on the Italian side of Mont Blanc (Pointe Baretti, 4,013 m).
