BARGAGLI (Scipione). I Trattenimenti. Venice, Bernardo Giunti, 1587. Small in-4, olive morocco, rich border of gilt fleurons and fillets, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (Italian binding of the period). First edition of this "unusual" collection of short stories (Brunet). Scipione Bargagli (1540-1612), brother of Girolamo and Celso Bargagli, came from a Sienese family. He was favoured by Emperor Rudolf II, receiving the titles of knight and count palatine, and was one of the most illustrious members of Siena's Accademia degli Intronati. I Trattenimenti was reprinted by Bernardo Giunti in 1591 and 1592. "The six short stories in this volume were included in the Novelle di autori senesi," notes Brunet. Missing spine ends, small tears on the edges of the boards, damp stain on the second board, discreet wetness and two small tears in the margins of the introductory leaves. Brunet, I, 655 - CNCE 4206.
