Barison, Giuseppe
Trieste 1853 - 1931
In Venice. Busy Activities on the Fish Market. Oil on canvas. 74 x 114cm. Signed lower left: G. (in ligature) Barison. Framed.
Provenance:
Private collection Baden-Wuerttemberg.
The artist Guiseppe Barison was an especially subtle observer. He was interested in people. The interactions, gestures, facial expressions. His contemporaries enlivened the sceneries of his genre paintings. Despite being staged, these views into the people's life appear like snapshots.
A spot by a canal in Venice. The houses on the other side of the canal shut off the scene almost completely. Only a small piece of the sky is visible. In the foreground, as if on a stage, is the main action: Two women have done their shopping with the fishermen. The trade has been finished. They turn around and walk towards the observer. This moment has been captured by Barison. The woman on the right is carrying a little girl on her left arm. She is holding a shopping basket in her left hand. Her right hand is raised. She is about to redistribute the burden. Her concentration is, however, still fixed on the action taking place behind her right shoulder. Her companion standing behind her is not yet able to detach herself from the fish vendor, who is kneeling next to his bowls and baskets on the ground. The interaction is going on: with words, looks, and with the help of a fan that the young woman is holding in front of her chest. Other visitors to the market, men and women alike, watch the game and seem amused. A little girl, who belongs to the two women, is not interested in the charming banter. She is turning towards the pigeons populating the square in the background.
The whole scenery is under a huge shadow which seems to be cast by the houses around the square. Only the canal running parallel to the painting in the background is lit by sunshine. The white shirts of the passing gondolieri collimate this very special light effect, while a large canvas, protecting the perishable goods from the sun, in contrast to that appears subdued.
Guiseppe Barison, who depicts the scene very delicately observed, came himself from a lower class. The son of a tailor, he was born in Trieste in 1853, which at that time was part of Austria-Hungary. He attracted attention with his talent for drawing and a rich patron, Anna de Rin, first enabled him to be trained as a painter in Trieste and later a training at Academy in Vienna. There he learned from the greatest from the field of history of the time: Carl von Blaas, was part of the circle of the Nazarener, and August
Eisenmenger.
Barison's early history works brought him great recognition. For example, he received a two-year scholarship in Rome for "Isabella Orsini and her Page". After that, starting in 1881, he lived in Venice for five years and his themes changed during that time. Instead of histories he now painted genre motives and portraits and was successful nationally as well as internationally. Several times he took part in the large exhibitions in Berlin,
Vienna, and Munich. In 1887, Barison relocated again to his hometown of Trieste.
The painting offered here depicts Guiseppe Barison's mastership at its peak. The moment is transported through the very threedimensionally designed main figures. Details, like the display of further fishermen on the right margin, or the figures not enganged in the action on the left margin give this painting an aimed cutout, suggesting the reality of the moment like a photographic snapshot.
