Lot no. 167
Baron Gérard, after
Portrait of Bonaparte, First Consul
Engraved by Richomme in 1835.
With a pencil dedication by the engraver:
"Richomme to his friend and colleague Mr. Corton".
Height: 56.30 cm - Width: 45.50 cm (frame).
B.E. Under glass.
Historical background:
This portrait of the First Consul by Gérard in February 1803, now in the Château de Chantilly, marks a turning point in the representation of Napoleon Bonaparte. After the emaciated Revolutionary General and then the Consul of the Republic in full regalia, the portrait painter here seems to be announcing the imperial dignity to come.
