John Barrow (1808-1898), a member of the Royal Geographical Society of which his father was a founder, is best known in England for his extensive knowledge of the polar regions. A member of the Alpine Club, he travelled the Alps, climbing Mont Blanc in 1861 and Mont Rose in 1862. He is the author of several travel books.
