Our composition can be compared with the angels painted by Bartolomé Roman in two surviving series: one in the Descalzas Reales monastery in Madrid and the other in the cycle of seven archangels in the Jesuit church of San Pedro de Lima. The devotion to guardian angels flourished in 17th-century Spain, in the context of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Our painter's style is very much Baroque, although it does contain some traces of Mannerism, probably influenced by his master Vicente Carducho (1576-1638). A copy of our painting recently went on sale1.
