Lot no. 157
BARTHOLOMEW PEDON (attr. to)
(Venice, 1665 - 1732)
Fantasy port view in moonlight
Oil on canvas, 72.2X98 cm
Provenance:
Rome, Tito Gobbi Collection
The painting finds precise correspondences with works by Bartolomeo Pedon, see, for example, Marina with Boats and Ruined Building in the Zeri Archive (no. 68547) and Landscape in the Moonlight, sold at Dorotheum on 21 March 2010, lot 159. The similarity of these works can be seen by observing the pictorial conduction and the same dreamy interpretation of the landscape. From these aspects it is also possible to grasp Pedon's modernity, his relevant role in interpreting the examples of Anton Eismann and especially Pieter Mulier known as the Tempest, shaping them during his maturity into typically rocaille poetics.
