A SHOWER PORCELAIN BASE, CA. 1750-1760; SLIGHTLY WORN, SOME MINOR DEFECTS, PARTIALLY FIRING, FEW RESTORATIONS
This base model, with a strong architectural layout that seems to recall the decorations of the Italian garden, stands out for its strong decorative impact, and constitutes a particularly interesting product of plastic production in Doccia.
The Detroit Institute of Arts (inv. 1990-263) possesses a variant of it (A. Phipps Darr, The Doccia Porcelain Sculpture Collection in the Detroit Institute of Arts, Quaderni di Doccia, VIII, Florence 2014-2015, card 19 p. 74) that can be dated to around 1755: the model is attributed to Gaspero Bruschi by Massimiliano Soldani Benzi. A third base, mounted as an inkwell and datable to the late 1750s, is now in the Cagnola collection in Gazzada (L. Melegati in AA.VV., La collezione Cagnola. Le Arti Decorative, Busto Arsizio, 1999, card 287, pp. 291-292). Ginori Lisci in 1963 (L. Ginori Lisci, La porcellana di Doccia, Milan 1963, p. 309) published a price list of the manufactory where, speaking of the large groups, it is specified that 'All the aforementioned pieces being painted sell for double the price, and when there is a painted porcelain base the price increases proportionally'.
