BATAK, Sumatra, Indonesia. The porhalaan engraved on the bone container is a divinatory calendar drawn up by the Datu (priest-magician). It is used to determine the auspicious or inauspicious days for carrying out projects or for healing. This container is used to store the pupuk (magical substance). The wooden ends are carved with a Singa, a mythical animal symbolising beneficial power. Size: 23x9 cm. Literature: "LES BATAK", a people from the island of Sumatra. Achim Sibeth, published by Olizanne, 1991. Provenance: Collected in situ in 1970 by Jacques Cortecero.
