Lot no. 16
[BAUDELAIRE (Charles)]. ASSELINEAU (Charles). Charles Baudelaire, his life and work. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1869. In-12, bradel brick percaline, cold-stamped fillets, speckled edges (Binding of the period). First edition of the first biography of Baudelaire, written by one of his most faithful friends: Charles Asselineau (1820-1874), to whom Mme Aupick had entrusted the task of editing the complete works of her son (next lot). The work is also of iconographic interest, as it is decorated with five famous engraved portraits of Baudelaire, including two original etchings by Édouard Manet and three etchings by Braquemond after Émile Deroy, Baudelaire himself and Gustave Courbet. A copy given by Charles Asselineau to Félicité Baudelaire with this autograph signed letter: à Madame Baudelaire / hommage de son tout dévoué / Ch. Asselineau. Charles Asselineau had met Baudelaire's sister-in-law at the notary's office of Narcisse Ancelle in 1866. She had renewed her acquaintance with Mme Aupick, who had moved to Honfleur after Alphonse's death in 1862. It was she who kept Asselineau informed of the state of health and death of Baudelaire's mother in the summer of 1871. A very precious Baudelaire relic. A charming copy in its first binding. Occasional heavy foxing. Carteret, I, 41 - Vicaire, I, 129 - Clouzot, 13.
