Lot no. 64
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Fleurs du mal. Paris, Govone, 1928-1937. Large in-4 (325 x 245 mm). Orange morocco with large gilt decoration, black suede lining, cover and spine (Marot-Rodde). Self-portrait by Baudelaire and one ms. page in facsimile. Edition of 353 copies. Mariette Lydis composed 2 successive suites to accompany this work: a suite of 10 coloured etchings signed by the artist (1928) printed in 150 copies; and a new suite of 33 coloured plates, also signed, in 1937. This copy, one of 15 on old japon, includes the 2 suites (1928 and 1935), the first with 3 states of the plates and an ORIGINAL AQUARELLE. A fine edition given by Count Giuseppe Govone, who became Mariette Lydis' third and last husband in 1934, reflecting the diversity of their tastes. SPECTACULAR MAROT-RODDE BINDING. These may have been "two very distinct bookbinders, Louise Marot and Suzanne Rodde" (Y. Peyré, Histoire de la reliure de création, 2015, p. 186). Some spotting.
