Lot no. 3
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). Les Fleurs du Mal. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1857. In-12, burgundy jansenist morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, gilt edges, gilt inner lace, cover, slipcase (M. Godillot). A highly sought-after first edition. It was printed on Angoulême vellum in an edition of 1300 copies, plus some twenty copies on hollande. After the famous trial that put six plays on the index, most of the edition, which had been out for six weeks, was already sold out, and only some 230 copies were left in shop, from which the offending plays had to be taken. A first edition copy complete with the condemned pieces, with the usual remarks ("Feurs du Mal" in the running title of pp. 31 and 108, p. 45 incorrectly numbered 44, "captieux" for "capiteux" in the first line of p. 201), except for the error in "s'embardissant", p. 12, which is corrected. A precious and desirable copy, with the rare cover featuring the Poulet-Malassis catalogue and very good margins. Barely faded spine, a few brown spots. Carteret, I, 118-123 - Oberlé, Auguste Poulet-Malassis, n°212 - En français dans le texte, n°276.
